Third Annual Yachats Valley Farm Tour - This Saturday, August 18th, from 10am-5pm

Pick up a map at the Yachats Visitor Center next to C&K Market or just cruise up the Yachats River Road and look for the Farm Tour signs. (From Waldport, turn left opposite the Landmark; from Florence, cross the Yachats River and turn right at Lori Lane, go to the top of the hill, and turn right on Yachats River Road.) This year, the owners of seven farms invite you to taste the flavors, explore the pastoral beauty, and visit with the "up the river" folks. Fresh produce will be available for purchase, as well as honey, cactuses, vegetable plants, cut flowers, fresh eggs, and more.

Visitors are invited to bring a picnic to enjoy outside at one of the farms or at Keller Creek Park. Information about the upcoming Coastal Farm to Fork Farm: A Harvest Meal at Forks Farm (http://tenriversfoodweb.org/home/?p=11241) will be available at participating farms.

The Tour farms are Seeds of Oregon (vegetables and plants), Triple D Ranch (grass-fed beef, lamb and goat; fresh cow and goat milk), Forks Farm (blueberries, cut flowers, winter squash, pumpkins), Rise & Shine Farm (organic honey and bee pollen), Starshine Farm (llamas, alpacas, and peacocks), Yachats Specialties (naturally-raised fruit, produce, and beef), and Yaquina Nursery (succulents and cactus).

Growers with greenhouses suggest you plan to visit them early to avoid the heat. Otherwise, come any time between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., Saturday August 18. For more information, contact Catherine Lucido at Forks Farm, 541 547 4461.

Writing Your Management Plan for Forest Landowners, Sept. 11, 6-9pm

A message from OSU Extension Lincoln County Forestry Agent, Jim Reeb:
Writing Your Management Plan for Forest Landowners
First Class: Tuesday September 11, 6:00pm – 9:00pm
Register by: Monday August 20.

Do you have a management plan for your forest property? A management plan is a written document that identifies the goals and objectives for your forest property. It charts your chosen course of action and becomes a written history of your property. Most cost share programs require that the landowner has an up-to-date written management plan. If you want your property certified you need a current active management plan.

Want to create a written management plan for your property to be eligible for cost share programs or to ensure that your current plan meets certification standards? OSU Lincoln County Extension Service will present a workshop to help forest owners achieve these goals. Classes are scheduled for September 11th, October 2nd and October 16th. So we have time to prepare a resource packet of information for you, you must register by Monday, August 20th. Cost is $40 per family and multiple family members of the same property are encouraged to attend. Registration forms and information are available at: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/lincoln/forestry/news

OR come by the OSU Lincoln County Extension office at 29 SE 2nd Street in Newport. This workshop is supported by a grant from the USFS, State & Private Forestry. Partners include American Tree Farm System, Oregon Small Woodlands Association, Oregon Department of Forestry, Associated Oregon Loggers, Oregon Forest Resources Institute and the Society of American Foresters.

TIES to the LAND Workshop – August 21, 2012

TIES to the LAND Workshop – August 21, 2012

Millions of acres of family-owned forest and farm land will change hands in the United States within the next decade. Many of these transfers will happen with virtually no planning.

In Oregon more than half of the forest landowners are over 65. The situation is similar in other states. Although most of these landowners say they want to keep the land in the family and pass it on to the next generation, few have taken the steps to do so. Succession planning is difficult at the best of times. When forest or farm land is at stake, the differences among family members in values, goals and lack of critical skills can lead to disaster. Without an effective plan, the owners' intentions may not be followed.

The Oregon State University Extension Forestry Program and the OSU Austin Family Business Program are teaming up to offer a facilitated workshop on succession planning.

This DVD-based interactive workshop explores succession planning - the human side of estate planning. It focuses on ways to maintain family ties to the land from generation to generation.

By attending this workshop you will learn about key challenges and the tools to deal with them, how to clarify your values and goals, the steps to positive succession planning, how to hold effective family meetings, and about legal and financial instruments that can support your plan.

The cost of the class is $35/family for breaks, and a Ties to the Land workbook and companion DVD designed to help families continue to improve and direct their communications and planning at home. We encourage families to attend together.

You must register by Thursday, August 16th. Please let us know how many family members will attend.

Workshop is on Tuesday, August 21st, from 6:00PM – 9:00PM at the Lincoln County Extension Office, 29 SE 2nd Street, Newport, OR. Contact Jim Reeb at the OSU Lincoln County Extension Service office in Newport for more information.

Software makes tough job of small farming easier

AgSquared, an innovative new software program, aims to make these essential tasks easy. Through the program’s sleek, Web-based interface, farmers can plan which crops to plant, map where they are in the fields and assign and check off tasks. Local Seafood in Lincoln County

Local Ocean (541-574-7959) in Newport is my happy place. Its display case of fresh fish is a celebration of Oregon's bounty. The servers are informed and enthusiastic. Local Ocean works with more than 50 local fishing boats to provide the freshest seafood on the Oregon coast in their restaurant and seafood market. Their canned tuna lists exactly where the tuna was caught, how and by which boat.

Ocean Bleu at Gino's Fish Market and Cafe (541-265-2424) in Newport sells fish from its own boat and buys fish directly from the docks and sells it to you. It also makes the best Dungeness crab Benedict I've ever had.

Rogue Brewery partners with Bornstein seafoods to serve a local seafood menu at its Newport locations. It also celebrates its Newport roots with a seasonal crab porter from Dungeness crab as well as an oyster stout.

When he's not out fishing, local fisherman and owner Robert Anthony greets his customers at the door of Luna Sea Fish House (541-547-4794) in Yachats. Dressed in foul-weather gear, he may have just returned from catching your lunch. He catches the salmon, tuna, halibut and crab himself.

Looking for volunteers to help at The Lemonade Project booth

With the start of the Newport Farmers' Market season, comes the start of
The Lemonade Project. We're looking for volunteers to help at The Lemonade
Project booth on Saturdays during the farmers market to squeeze and sell
lemonade. It's a really fun time getting to know the farmers market
customers. Come and volunteer one Saturday!

If you are interested please contact Chloe Rico, 541-867-8672 or
chloe@tenriversfoodweb.org.

The Lemonade Project is a social enterprise sponsored by the Newport
Farmers Market and Ten Rivers Food Web and run by community volunteers.
Volunteers make and sell fresh squeezed lemonade at a booth at the Newport
Farmers Market.

The proceeds from the lemonade sales will fund the That’s My Farmer SNAP
Incentive Program, benefiting shoppers at the Market who participate in
S.N.A.P. (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called Food
Stamps). The That's My Farmer SNAP Incentive Program provides S.N.A.P.
shoppers with matching (additional) funds, six dollars each week, when
they use their benefits card at the Market, and spend at least six
dollars, to purchase fresh food.

This program encourages low-income shoppers to come to the Farmers Market
and helps to stretch their food dollars while adding healthy
fruits, vegetables and local foods to their diet.

News from Chloe Rico, Community Food Organizer of Lincoln Co.

Hi,

The next Lincoln County Foods Group meeting will be Tuesday, January 10th from 12-2pm at the Newport Extension Office in the Conference Room. Lunch will be served. Please RSVP (and let me know if you have dietary restrictions) -- I'd like to have an idea about how much food to bring.

We discussed upcoming work for 2012 including a Winter Food Film Series, Food Demos at pantries, cooking classes, a Harvest Meal and Farm Tour in the summer.

We'll spend this next meeting working on the Winter Food Film Series that will run from Jan. 22nd - Feb. 12th. And on a recruitment plan for new group members and volunteers to support upcoming and continuing work.

We would like to get to word out about this upcoming Lincoln County Foods Group meeting because we've had low attendance the end of 2011. Attached is a flier to advertise the meeting and upcoming work. Feel free to send it to listservs, pass it along to friends or print out copies to leave at public places.

I will be at the Jan. 7th Lincoln County Fairgrounds Farmers Market handing out fliers and conducting outreach for the food group, if you would like to join let me know.

Happy New Year!
Chloe
