Alyssum Intercropping with Lettuce Provides Pest Control

Alyssum Intercropping with Lettuce Provides Pest Control
The Organic Farming Research Foundation reported on the work of USDA researcher Dr. Eric Brennan, who has developed an "additive intercropping" technique for aphid control in lettuce. Brennan established that planting one or two alyssum plants per every 50 lettuce plants provides adequate aphid control without reducing yields.

Food Stamp (SNAP) recipients can now use their benefits to prepay for CSA shares!

Good news for CSA Farmers and Food Stamp recipients!
Food Stamp (SNAP) recipients can now use their benefits to prepay for CSA shares! It used to be that SNAP recipients could not prepay for food and had to charge their EBT card each time they picked up their CSA share. This made it harder for SNAP recipients to budget and prevented farmers from receiving payments early in the season when their costs are highest. Now SNAP recipients can pay at the beginning of the year, month...

Managing Risks on an Urban Farm Webinar Thu, Jan 15, 2015 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM PST

Managing Risks on an Urban Farm

Webinar Registration

Urban farmers face many risks in producing safe and affordable food.  Some of the risks are common to all types of farming; however, many are unique to the urban setting, including zoning regulations, access to water, and managing contaminated soils.  While many cities in the U.S. are working to address some of the needs of urban farmers, profitability remains a challenge.  This webinar will focus on the risk management strategies of two urban farms and how they have overcome several of the barriers facing urban farmers today.
