TIES to the LAND Workshop – August 21, 2012

TIES to the LAND Workshop – August 21, 2012

Millions of acres of family-owned forest and farm land will change hands in the United States within the next decade. Many of these transfers will happen with virtually no planning.

In Oregon more than half of the forest landowners are over 65. The situation is similar in other states. Although most of these landowners say they want to keep the land in the family and pass it on to the next generation, few have taken the steps to do so. Succession planning is difficult at the best of times. When forest or farm land is at stake, the differences among family members in values, goals and lack of critical skills can lead to disaster. Without an effective plan, the owners' intentions may not be followed.

The Oregon State University Extension Forestry Program and the OSU Austin Family Business Program are teaming up to offer a facilitated workshop on succession planning.

This DVD-based interactive workshop explores succession planning - the human side of estate planning. It focuses on ways to maintain family ties to the land from generation to generation.

By attending this workshop you will learn about key challenges and the tools to deal with them, how to clarify your values and goals, the steps to positive succession planning, how to hold effective family meetings, and about legal and financial instruments that can support your plan.

The cost of the class is $35/family for breaks, and a Ties to the Land workbook and companion DVD designed to help families continue to improve and direct their communications and planning at home. We encourage families to attend together.

You must register by Thursday, August 16th. Please let us know how many family members will attend.

Workshop is on Tuesday, August 21st, from 6:00PM – 9:00PM at the Lincoln County Extension Office, 29 SE 2nd Street, Newport, OR. Contact Jim Reeb at the OSU Lincoln County Extension Service office in Newport for more information.
