Exciting news from Jen Christion Meyers of TRFW: Lincoln County's Community Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP) and Ten Rivers Food Web (TRFW) were awarded funds to launch the That's My Farmer SNAP Incentive Program at the Toledo and Lincoln City Farmers' Market next spring! The program is currently running in Newport. You can learn about it on the TRFW website: http://tenriversfoodweb.org/home/?p=9224.
The new That's My Farmer Outreach Coordinator, Katy Giombolini, starts her AmeriCorps service August 29th. A meeting for Lincoln County market managers to start planning for the spring will probably be in late September or early October.

Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) application deadline is August 29
New template available for small VAPG grants!
This year may be the best year ever for Oregon farmers, ranchers, fishers, and foresters who add value to the agricultural commodities they raise/harvest. That’s because USDA Rural Development’s VAPG program has more funds to award than ever before and the application process has been simplified. Read more about this here: http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/or/biz/VAPG_2011best.pdf
But the deadline for applications is fast approaching – Monday, August 29, 2011.
The good news is that RD-Oregon has just released a consolidated, simplified template for producers who applying for working capital grants of $49,999 or less – probably the simplest and most beneficial type of VAPG assistance. You can find this template here: http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/or/biz/VAPGnarrativetemplate2011_smallWC.doc
We know that August is a terribly busy month for Oregon producers, but if you can find the time, this opportunity has the potential to be very worthwhile.
For full details on the VAPG program, please visit: http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/or/vapg.htm

Report from Beaver Ridge Farm
Beaver Ridge Farm on N. Beaver Creek has a few almost-laying hens left and will sell eggs and some hens as time goes on. The leghorns just started laying this week. Good news- the farm is raising all chickens on organic feed.
The meat chickens raised on all organic feed are now mostly in the freezer. We will start a new batch in the fall. The meat chickens are between 3 and 5 lbs and we are selling them at $4/lb.
The turkeys will be ready in early November, price is yet to be determined. There are two varieties. Call 541-563-5385.
