TOP PICKS FOR YOUR POLLINATOR GARDEN IN 2015

Usually, we share the link to each month’s Bring Back the Pollinators e-newsletter. This month, we decided to do things a little differently. Our pollinator staff each picked a favorite flower. Instead of presenting all 11 in one go, we decided to share one each day. (And, yes, we really do now have 11 people working full-time on pollinator conservation, the largest -- and dare we say, the best! -- pollinator conservation team in North America.)

With staff based in a half dozen U.S. states, the picks include plants that are appropriate for different regions of the country. We hope these suggestions are helpful to you. As always, we encourage you to check your state's invasive plant watch list before planting a new species.

Blazing Star (genus Liatris)
With its showy, electric pink or purple flower spikes, blazing star is a magnet for bees and butterflies. Its foliage is usually attractive, too, and the plant’s tidy appearance makes it a great choice for gardens and landscaping.
Status: Over 30 species of blazing star are native to the United States, east of the Rockies only. All are perennial.
Planting: For best results, unstratified seed can be planted in fall or stratified seed can be planted in spring. Transplanting should be timed to avoid prolonged periods of cold, heat, or drought. Blazing star flowers in mid to late summer and sometimes into the fall.
Needs: Most species of blazing star do best in full sun but some will also tolerate partial shade. Soil moisture requirements vary, but most species have average water needs. They do not have particular soil type requirements.
