Getting “down and dirty” on local organic sustainable food sources in Lincoln County
This spring the Self Reliant 4-H Club of Lincoln County will start a 7,500 square feet garden using some the latest techniques in an effort to develop a Local Organic Sustainable Food System.
The Project is being funded by a grant from Oregon State University. The Organic Sustainable Food Project will be in Toledo Oregon, at the old community garden west of the skate board park.
Techniques to be used to develop an Organic Sustainable Food Supply:
· EarthBarrels© - a patio self wicking container gardening system
· EarthBeds© - raised self wicking beds with cloches
· Underground Heated Greenhouse – heating a greenhouse by storing the daytime heat in the ground for release at night
· Aquaponics – a closed system of using the fish waste to provide an organic food source for the growing plants and the plants provide a filter to clean the water for the fish.
· Compost Hot Water System – using compost to heat the fish water at night
The purpose of a 4-H project is to demonstrate to the community that a local organically grown food supply can be available on their deck or in their back yard.
Activities which the youth will be involved:
· Programming the Greenhouse Control Computer
· Intense Gardening Techniques
· Caring for fish
· Growing with soil
· Growing without soil
· Build EarthBarrels, EarthBeds and Cloches
· Learn Composting
· Manage a Greenhouse

If any adult or high school student has any interest in an Organic Sustainable Food Systems please join us.
No experience required.
